The University of Dhaka is the oldest and most prestigious university in Bangladesh. This public university offers a wide range of programs including Bengali, English, education, history, physics, and zoology. Since its establishment in 1921 as an affiliated college of Calcutta University, this institution has grown to be the center for higher learning not only for Dhaka city but also for all of East Bengal (East Pakistan) and later Bangladesh.
The first groups admitted here were 77 students each in the faculties of Arts and Science. In addition courses such as Law/Commerce were opened gradually. At present, its enrolment stands at about 40,000 students with over 300 teachers and more than 3000 supporting staff members.

North-South University, abbreviated as NSU, is a private university in Dhaka, Bangladesh. It was established in 1992 by a group of business leaders and educators. The university began with only two programs: Management and Engineering-related subjects at the undergraduate level. Today it has 27,500 students; 1750 faculty members and 1800 supporting staff.
NSU ranked 1st among private universities in Bangladesh by the university ranking of 2016. It has international branch campuses in Singapore (2011) and Mauritius (2012).
North-South University is the first university in Bangladesh that has its own campus mall, the City Center. It was originally chartered in 1993 by a group of Bangladeshi educators, who then worked for universities in the United States. The university opened its doors to 44 students at BAF Shaheen College in Dhaka on July 30, 1995, as American International University-Bangladesh. AUB’s curriculum, modeled after the liberal arts and sciences curricula of America’s finest colleges and universities, is enriched by Bangladeshi culture and history.
Today its 350 students come from all over Bangladesh and many other countries such as Brazil, China, India, Iraq, Nepal, and Sudan.
